The 2020 Defender makes use of Land Rover's Advanced Driver Assistance System, and comes loaded with emergency braking, lane-keeping assist system, and cruise control. Safety features for the 2003 model include four-channel ABS and electronic traction control for all four wheels.

For its 2020 model year, the Defender gets a 2.0L 296 hp inline four-cylinder Ingenium engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission while older model years, such as the 2003 Defender, receive a 2.5L SOHC direct-injection intercooler diesel turbo inline five-cylinder engine with 120 hp. Building upon the initial fanfare of the first-generation model released in 1983, following generations of the Defender receives performance and aesthetic updates, all while maintaining a tough aluminum body and iconic box frame that continue to define the 4WD behemoth's tradition of toughness and endurance. The Defender’s look takes inspiration from Land Rover’s first Series I model revealed at the 1948 Amsterdam motor show. Land Rover's spartan model, the Defender, stands tall in its pursuit of exceptional off-road performance.
